Announcing Zabuya Bakery!
Great things happen when collaboration begins. Enkanini sits at the top end of the industrial area of Stellenbosch. It’s the home to over 8000 people who live without proper sewage and electricity. It’s a place InSite has been active since 2011. Yondela Tyawa, saw the need to collaborate, to make living conditions better and safer, so we started working together.
Our collaborative efforts grew when a parent of an InSite team member connected us with The Phillips Foundation. Now solar street lights and funding for a new business were on the table. Yondela decides, being a trained cook, to have that business be a bakery. He gets a microloan via the MCI for the bakery ovens, Phillips funds the structure, InSite helps with the logistics and wala… Zabuya Bakery is born surrounded by four solar street lights.
It’s truly a first for many reasons:
- The first brick building in Enkanini.
- The first street lights (and solar) in the community (and they own them).
- The first bakery in an informal settlement in South Africa.
- The first time the Phillips Foundation puts solar lights in a community on the continent of Africa.
Join in on the fun of changing lives for the better. What can you offer to help someone else?
Stay tuned for the official opening of the Bakery and the lighting ceremony of the street lights.
